Steaming sustainably
Preserving the past, protecting the future.

At the London Museum of Water & Steam, we celebrate the powerful legacy of Victorian engineering – but we’re also looking forward, committed to operating in a way that respects and protects our planet.
Steam is central to our story, and running our historic engines remains a unique and much-loved part of the visitor experience. However, we recognise that firing boilers comes with an environmental impact. That’s why we’ve taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint, improve energy efficiency, and explore more sustainable ways to share our collection.

We operate our steam engines only on select days and continue to monitor and minimise fuel use. We’ve also introduced changes across the museum to reduce waste, conserve water, and encourage greener travel for staff and visitors alike.
Looking ahead, we’re working with industry experts and heritage organisations to explore the long-term future of sustainable steam – ensuring that generations to come can enjoy the sights, sounds, and stories of our engines without compromising the environment.
